You may look at this photo and think it’s in black and white, but that’s only the concept we use to describe the medium. What makes it successful are all the shades of grey that are present. The shades in the shadows give it depth and meaning. As we struggle to confront the extremely difficult issues we are presented with, I urge you to not just look at the dominant tones, but rather the nuances that make up the whole picture. This nameless peak may seem like an insurmountable obstacle, but in the shadows we see the topography and subtle ways to map our approach to the top. Reaching a conclusion requires us to accept all of the subtleties that make up the whole picture, not mearly jumping straight to the bright highlights and the deep shadows. It’s difficult. It requires thought. It requires us to accept the slight blemishes that seem insignificant. But when you accept the good, the bad, and the seemingly insignificant, you can reach something altogether beautiful.
